Question of the Week

Oreo cookies are delicious.  Did you know they haven't always been kosher.  Here is this weeks two-part question:

1.  In what year did the Oreo become kosher?
2.  What similar cookie was used by many kosher-keeping Jews for years until the Oreo became kosher?

One ticket or each correct answer; three tickets if you get them both correct.  :)

Kochavim Class Update (Grades 5/6/7)

Recently a co-worker asked me to describe my BSI class. Because the class is comprised of 12 distinct personalities, I struggled to answer the question. Instead of describing the class, I chose to describe how the class makes me feel.

  •  Proud, because the students attend every Wednesday
  •  Enthusiastic, because the students are engaged
  •  Hopeful, because the students represent our future Jewish leaders

In an effort to reinforce the importance of Jewish learning, as a class we have been focusing on the following:

  •  Pirkei T’fillah, which so far includes Avot V’Imahot and G’vurot
  •  Reading and translating Hebrew prayers
  •  Jewish Holidays
  •  The Jewish Law Review (The Mishnah)

This year I also introduced journaling as a way for the students to see a progression of their thoughts and ideas as we explore Judaism.

I look forward to a year filled with Jewish learning. Should you have specific questions, feedback, or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

Thank you,

David Fairchild

Chalutzim class update (Grades 3/4)

As soon as BSI started, so did the Holidays. In light of Rosh Hashanah, we reflected on why we give service to others, how we can serve others on Rosh Hashanah. For Yom Kippur, we reflected on the different ways we show G-d how we atone and what things we would like to see in the upcoming year. We spent Sukkot with our Shelicha Hadas and other teachers visiting from our sister city Givatayim, Israel learning about the different meanings behind the parts of the lulav and etrog.

After the High Holy Days, we have been reading portions of the Talmud with an exercise from “You be the judge” that complements. So far, we have learned about Genesis and what kinds of charity and work can be done on Shabbat, Cain and Able and the power of words and their affect on people, and the tower of Babel.

We have been working a lot on Hebrew reading to work up to reading full prayers. We have been brushing up on the Aleph Bet and vowels to support the foundation of strong Hebrew reading skills. All of the students have shown improvement and we will be starting to learn the blessings of the Torah Service within the next few weeks. In the meantime, each student reads to the best of his or her abilities and the next student helps to correct them. Students who are struggling with the basics of Hebrew have peer tutors who have mastered the Hebrew exercise. I am a firm believer that when you teach someone a skill, your mastery of the skill increases greatly as well.

Rebecca Sadowitz

Chaverim class update (Grades 1/2)

We are learning a lot in Chaverim. Vowels are getting easier to identify, and all of those consonants are miraculously beginning to form words. Your child should begin to recognize three and four letter words. Please ask them to show you what they know. We use the wipe off boards to practice writing our Hebrew letters, and have begun to write our Hebrew names as well.

Did you know there was an elephant in the Chanukah story? We are learning about interesting details in addition to traditional text. We often have stimulating questions about G-d and who/what/where and sometimes WHY? We use several different texts in our classroom, which helps us to provide different perspectives on the age-old questions.

I love getting to know your child every week, and feel that it is a privilege to teach them and grow with them. If you ever have, any questions please feel free to contact me directly. Thank you for entrusting your precious children and their Hebrew studies to me and B'nai Zion.

L'hitraot.

Volunteers needed for this Sunday!

Dear friends,

This Sunday, B'nai Zion will participate in the Yom Ha'Atzmaut program presented by the Jewish Federation of Greater Chattanooga.  We will have two booths at the festivities:

1.  Planting the Land - Children of all ages will be able to decorate small biodegradable planters and plant their own seeds to take home.
2.  Bedouin Tent - People will be able to have a fun bedouin experience featuring coffee, tea and playing the game Seega (similar to mancala).

We are looking for a few volunteers to help out at the booths in two shifts: 12 to 1:15pm and 1:15 to 2:30pm.

Please contact Jason if you could help.

See you all at the event!
